Qualcomm reportedly dominates the smartphone app processor market with a 31% revenue share
Qualcomm, the chip-making company dominated other tech companies in the worldwide smartphone application processor (AP) market in 2020 with a revenue share of 31 percent. This figure was achieved due to the high demand for its Snapdragon series according to a new report by Strategy Analysis.
Qualcomm was followed closely by Apple who held a 23% share after the launch of the iPhone 12 series boosted its A14 Bionic, the world’s first 5-nanometer AP.
HiSilicon. The Chinese company held an18 percent AP market share, securing third place as the Taiwanese tech company, MediaTek followed closely behind also with an 18 percent share of the global AP market share.
Maker of the Exynos chipsets, Samsung secured fifth place in the global AP market with a 9 percent market share.
The tablet AP market remained dominated by apple in 2020 with a 48 percent revenue share. Intel secured the second position with a 16 percent market share, and Qualcomm came third with a 14 percent market share.
Sravan Kunodojjala, Associate Director at Strategy analysis said that Despite the covid-19 pandemic, the shortages, and trade war, the smartphone AP market still achieved an all-time high revenue in the year 2020. Shipments of higher-priced 5G and 5nm AP shipments increased, pushing the total growth.
Sravan also predicted that an increase in the mid-range and low-end 5G APs from top companies like Qualcomm, Samsung LSI, MediaTek, and Unisoc will inevitably pressure the average AP selling of smartphone prices in 2021.
Globally, the smartphone AP market grew by 25 percent to a record-breaking $25 billion dollars in 2020.
The shipment of 5GAPs rose dramatically in 2020, accounting for over 25 percent of total smartphone AP shipments for the year.
TSMC had the highest share of the APfundry market with over two-thirds of the market share in 2020, Samsung Foundry came in second and both foundries enjoyed strong 7nm and 5nm AP demands.
According to the report, Smartphone AP vendors continue to use Artificial intelligence as a key part of their strategy, pushing the shipments of smartphone APs with on-device AI engines to over 900 million in 2020.
