No more ‘Mi’ Branding for Xiaomi after Mix 4?
Xiaomi is said to be dropping the ‘Mi' branding, moving on to simply ‘Xiaomi' starting with the next flagship model. This branding alteration is with the company's latest top-of-the-line phone, the Mix 4. It was revealed in China on August 10 under the name of Xiaomi Mix 4. For now, we have yet to learn whether the branding change merely concerns all of the company's smartphones or all the Mi-branded products. The Mi brand has been in existence for about 10 years now.
The name change was initially revealed when Mix 4 was recently released. Instead of being called Mi Mix 4, like the phones from the preceding phone lines (Mi Mix 3, Mi Mix 2, etc.), it bears the name of Xiaomi Mix 4. A current report by XDA developers who cite a company representative claims that all Xiaomi’s products will be branded as Xiaomi instead Mi from now on. Right now, however, nothing is clear, since the company’s last tablet series is still called Mi Pad 5 and Mi Pad 5 Pro.
Thus, we have yet to find out whether Xiaomi made a decision to forego the Mi branding entirely for all of its products or only smartphones. Whether this change will concern the Indian market, too, remains a mystery for now.
The first ever Mi-branded device, the Xiaomi Mi 1 smartphone, was revealed in August 2011, which makes the brand almost a decade old. Over the years, the Mi brand has expanded its production to tablets, smart devices, TVs, tools, audio accessories, toys, and much more.
Counterpoint research data demonstrated that Xiaomi has become the #1 global smartphone brand in June 2021 – for the first time in history. Its sales increased by 26% compared to May, and it had a 17.1% market share of global smartphone shipments. Strategy Analytics reported Xiaomi topping the 5G Android global phone shipments in Q2 2021.
The company is readying to launch the following new products on the Indian market: Mi TV 5X, Mi Band 6, and Mi Notebook. They are to be revealed at its Smarter Living 2022 event on August 26. In addition, Redmi 10 Prime is supposed to launch in India on September 3.
