iPhone 12: iPhone 12 & iPhone 12 Mini
Apple released its newest forerunner iPhones, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, on October 13, 2020. These are affordable phones with powerful features that are sold simultaneously with the more costly iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 and 12 mini suits anybody who does not need Pro camera features or stainless steel bodies.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 replaced the iPhone 11, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 being an all-new size making it the smallest phone Apple has released since the2016 iPhone SE. considering its small size, the iPhone 12 mini will suit those who prefer using one hand to operate the iPhone
For the first time, all this year’s iPhone models have Super Retina XDR OLED displays, having an edge-to-edge design except the Face ID notch and small edge bezels. The display of the standard iPhone 12 models and the Pro models have no difference
The resolution of the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini is 2430 x 1080 with 476 pixels per inch, while the resolution of the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 is 2532 x 1170 with 460 pixels per inch. These displays support HDR with 1200 nits peak brightness, Wide Colour for exact, realistic colors, Haptic Touch for feedback, and True Tone to align with the display color temperature to the ambient lighting for a more natural watching experience.
Apple revised the iPhone 12 design this year, presenting flat edges, a shift from the round corners in the past models, and have a similar design to the iPad Pro. A new Ceramic Shield cover protects the front of the phone; this replaces the usual cover glass. Apple reports that the Ceramic shield is mixed with nano-ceramic crystals to offer four times drop functionality.
Glass is still used to make the back of the iPhone, with an aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure sandwiched between the device's two halves. These are available in five colors: blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED. Like the iPhone 12 Pro models, the iPhone 12 models have IP68 water and dustproof and can withstand a 6-meter water submersion for up to 30 minutes.
This year's iPhone 12 models support 5G connectivity for quicker uploads and downloads, streaming quality videos, enhanced gaming, and higher-definition 1080p FaceTime calls. There is a worldwide availability of 5G coverage, but mmWave 5G, the fastest available 5G technology, is only supported by iPhone 12 devices sold in the United States.
The iPhone models available in other countries are restricted to the slower but the popular Sub-6 GHz 5G networks. 5G speeds in the U.S. can shoot to highs of 4Gbps, even in areas with dense populations.
The unavailability of 5G supports Gigabit LTE, and Smart Data Mode changes to LTE connection to conserve battery life when 5G speeds are unnecessary.
The iPhone 12 and 12 mini support WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Additionally, they feature a U1 Ultra Wideband chip for spatial awareness and interactivity with other gadgets, including the U1 feature like the HomePod mini.
All the iPhone 12 models have a new A14 chip, a first chip in the smartphone sector founded on a 5-nanometer performance process and efficiency-boosting. Apple reports that the 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU in the A14 is 50 percent faster than the fastest rival smartphone chips. The A14 chip has a 16-core Neural Engine, which increases machine learning task performance by 80 percent.
Most iPhone 12 and 12 mini attributes are similar to the Pro models, with the camera being the key distinguishing aspect. In comparison, the pro models' setup has a triple-lens camera with a LiDAR scanner and other bells and whistles, the lenses of the iPhone 12, and 12 mini simple and less sophisticated dual-lens camera setup.
All in all, the new iPhone 12 models have greater camera advancements compared to the iPhone 11. It has an f/2.4 Ultra-Wide camera and a Wide camera with a new f/1.6 aperture that allows 27 percent more light for improved low-light condition performance, including 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom.
The A14 chip energizes new photography features with a more improved deep mix for enhanced photos with improved texture and reduced noise and enhanced night mode with improved image contrasts. It has a smart Smart HDR 3 feature that controls the white balance, texture, contrast, and photo saturation for images that look more natural.
Same as the iPhone 12 Pro models, the iPhone 12 models achieve Dolby Vision capture of 30fps HDR video, allowing the capturing, editing, and sharing of cinema-standard videos using the iPhone. Additionally, it supports up to 60fps 4K video recording. It has enhanced cinematic video stabilization and a feature for night mode time-lapse, including Dolby Vision selfie videos through the TrueDepth camera.
The TrueDepth camera continues to support the iPhone’s Face ID facial recognition biometric authentication feature, and it features a 12-megapixel camera. Currently, the selfie camera supports Smart HDR 3, Deep Fusion, Night mode, and Night mode Portrait shots.
Regarding the battery duration, the iPhone 12 gives up to 17 hours of video playback, video playback streaming of 11 hours, or 65 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 12 mini gives up to 15 hours of video playback, 10 hours of streaming video playback, or 50 hours of audio playback. The two iPhone models are fast charging; the 20W power adapter gives a 50 percent charge within 30 minutes.
Apple released MagSafe accessories together with the iPhone 12 models. They are made to work with magnet rings within iPhone backs. It contains a MagSafe charger, MagSafe iPhone cases, and wallet accessories. MagSafe is compatible with 15W wireless charging, an advancement of the available 7.5 W charging using typical Qi-based wireless adapters. The Lightning port, which remains the same, can also charge the iPhone 12 models.
Apple removed the power adapter and EarPods from the iPhone 12 box, so you must buy these accessories on their own. Currently, all iPhone models come with a default USB-C to Lightning cable since it eliminated the USB-A version.
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the two high-end models that are coming along with the iPhone 12 and 12 mini. The Pro version bodies are made out of stainless steel and offer more advanced camera technology.
